Dive into the world of digital character design and learn real-world techniques from professional character artist Travis Overstreet. This intensive weekend course covers everything that you need to enter the world of character design and stand out. Whether you’re interested in working with video games, film, or comic books, these universal truths and design methods will help you shine.

Every character is rooted in a story. Study and create archetypes for a wide range of genres that enhance the lore and environment. You’ll develop detailed descriptions and character briefs using mind-mapping exercises to bring the idea to life and envision design variations.

Shape, form, and gesture are your best tools to translate emotional value and connect to your audience. Guided sketching exercises make theories actionable as you expand from basic head shape and expressions to full body character designs.

Then, your characters will continue to take shape through a series of pose and stance sketches. With guided examples, you can see exactly how to convey energy, attitude, and motion through the line of action that you choose. Put your story to the test with a silhouette challenge and make sure that your character sells the idea in less than three seconds!

Once your character design is finalized, it’s time to add a unique personal style using fashion accessories, and rendering for final delivery. By the end of the course, you’ll be an experienced character artist with a deep understanding of how to create an  emotional connection to your characters and will walk away with several examples for your portfolio.

I had a blast pushing the boundaries of sketching into a field I really haven’t had the chance to explore. I learned a lot and created things I didn’t think I could; I would definitely come back again.

The Chimirus workshop was an incredible, fun opportunity to meet others with the same passions, to learn in a non-judgemental environment, and to, well, create! 10/10 recommend to anyone who is thinking about going.
